Goodbye Scout

A little over two weeks ago Scout suddenly had a hard time getting up from bed and became lethargic. Initial vet tests came back normal and we had hoped it was arthritis, not unusual for a 12 year old German Shepherd. But later that day after seeing his neck swell and rechecking with our vet, we took him to the emergency vet. He was hospitalized for a couple of days so they could stabilize him until we could figure out what was wrong. Unfortunately a more in depth ultrasound of his organs showed he had a very aggressive type of cancer. The treatments and medications he received, as well as continued care at home allowed us to love on him for two more weeks. Today, we let him go in peace with love, surrounded by his family and with bacon and chicken still warm off the stove.

We adopted Scout when he was just 2 months old from the Wenatchee Humane Society, about twelve years ago. Scrolling through Petfinder, we fell in love with "Sunny", who had been found abandoned with one other litter mate in the city. Sunny became our Scout, and he taught us *all the things* about German Shepherds. He was the sweetest and feistiest little guy, with a great work drive. Through the years we did a ton of training, and even did some agility with him. Scout was with us through so many major life events over the past decade, it's hard to think of life without him. And while the grief we feel now is agony, looking back at our past adventures only fills us with joy.  Scout was an amazing dog, who lived a happy, healthy and long life.

Scout, you protected our family so well, but now your watch has ended.
Rest easy my sweet boy and give Schatze our love.
